Discover Maryborough

Situated on the Mary River, Maryborough was first settled in 1847 and is one of Queensland's oldest towns. Maryborough captures this history in its beautiful restored buildings, having one of Australia's largest collections of 19th and early 20th century architecture.

Maryborough is also known as the 'Queenslander' Capital. It is the birthplace of P.L.Travers, author of the Mary Poppins books, and a number of places in town will remind you of the book and Walt Disney musical. With a population of 26,000, Maryborough is located about three hours drive North of Brisbane and is an ideal base for touring the Fraser Coast region.

The last weekend of the month is a festive weekend in Maryborough with Gatakers by Night and Ghostly Tours and Tales organised on the Saturday night and Sunday in the Park on the Sunday. Sunday in the Park is when locals and visitors have the opportunity to take a ride on miniature and replica steam trains, enjoy music from brass bands and sample food stalls from 9.00am to 1.00pm.

The Ghostly Tours and Tales of the Port of Maryborough provide a night that combines a delightfully eerie experience, a touch of theatre, a glance into history with spooky tales and dinner. Hangings, the "black death", brothels, opium dens and murders most foul - learn the bizarre, gruesome and staggering secrets of this old port city on a delightfully eerie dinner tour of some of its most haunted historic sites. Be entertained and spooked as a cast of characters in 1890s period costumes recount with great wit and charm true stories of love, betrayal, tragedy and unspeakable crimes.

The Ghostly Tours and Tales is a dinner tour organised in haunted historic sites and includes:
  • Fully escorted coach transport
  • A night-time tour of Maryborough's historic Portside precinct
  • A spooky, guided lamplight tour of the old Maryborough cemetery
  • A rare opportunity to see inside glorious heritage-listed buildings
  • A complimentary glass of "courage"
  • Added extras include strange orbs, unexplained shadows and unavoidable shivers
